Abstract:

“In recent years, political debates on deportation have gained momentum, mainly triggered by growing migratory movements that are framed by a d iscourse on the undeservingness of non- citizens and the securitisation of borders. In consequence, many European countries are progressively restricting migration law to increase the number of returns of rejected asylum seekers and migrants with precarious legal status.
Based on an ethnographic study in Switzerland, the article zooms in on local deportation practices, yet links these to a w ider network of national and international actors. Understanding deportation as a c orridor, a c oncept that highlights the procedure as beginning and ending long before and after the actual removal, it argues that we can find such transnational networks already at the local level. The material includes observations of and interviews with bureaucrats in two migration offices and with police officers in one cantonal police station, case files collected at these stations as well as further interviews with actors at the national level. This allows for a d eeper understanding of the complex deportation processes behind the political spectacle of removal. Additionally, it shows how the study of such networks can address issues of professionalisation as well as discrimination towards those individuals awaiting deportation.”
