Abstract:

The many thousands of Swiss colonists who came to America in the eighteenth century directed their course mainly to Pennsylvania and Carolina, which they commonly believed to be parts of the West India Islands. Two colonies were founded under Swiss leadership, one in I7IO at New Bern, North Carolina, under Christoph von Graffenried, the other in I732 at Purrysburgh, South Carolina, promoted by Jean Pierre Purry of Neuchatel.”
