Abstract:

The enactment of the Free Movement Agreement (FMA) of Switzerland with the European Union in June 2002 led to the fear in Switzerland that immigrant workers could threaten the jobs of the resident workforce. An outgrowth of this fear was the adoption of the Mass Immigration Initiative(MMI), aimed curbing the influx of foreign workers, by the Swiss voters in February 2014. Against this backdrop, the following paper investigates the impact of the post-2002 migration of foreign workers from the EU on the employment opportunities of resident workers empirically.
