Abstract:
“Several articles appearing in this and other publications in the last decade have indicated an interest in pursuing backward the threads that make up the complex of ideas, customs, arts, etc. -sometimes called “the culture pattern” – in present-day California. Doris Marion Wright’s
“The Making of Cosmopolitan California – An Analysis of Immigration, 1848-1870,” and Marion Clawson’s article on “What It Means to be a Californian” suggest a healthy trend in research along this line, and the writer is convinced that more extensive investigation of the details of the pattern is
needed.”
