Abstract:

“Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons particulièrement à la transition entre jeunesse et vie adulte dans le domaine familial. Une recherche réalisée en Suisse auprès d’enfants d’Espagnols et d’Italiens issus des classes populaires permet de comprendre les modalités de cette transition pour ces populations. La comparaison avec un groupe contrôle composé d’enfants de Suisses issus d’un milieu social proche permet de saisir les spécificités de la transition pour les enfants d’immigrés sur le plan familial, alors que sur les plans de la formation et de l’emploi il existe de grandes similitudes entre les deux populations. Quatre dimensions principales sont abordées: la durée de la cohabitation entre parents et enfants et les expériences de vie indépendante de ces derniers, différentes questions liées au mariage et à l’arrivée des enfants, la gestion des tâches quotidiennes et de la prise de décision par le couple, les liens intergénérationnels entre parents et enfants après le départ de ces derniers du foyer parental.”

“In this paper, our interest lies more especially in the transition between childhood and adulthood within the family circle. A study carried out in Switzerland, focussed on children of Spanish and Italian working class parentage, allows one to understand the whys and wherefores of the transitions as concerns these communities. By comparing them with a control group made up of children of socially similar Swiss origin, we can identify the specifics of the familial transition of these immigrant children, while noting that as regards training and employment, there are strong resemblances between the two groups. We have focused on four main elements: the length of time parents and children lived together and the experience of the latter as autonomous beings; various issues related to marriage and having their own children; the couple’s management of daily tasks and decision-making, the intergenerational links between parents and children after the latter have left the parental home.”
