Abstract:
“In recent years, global-historical, transnational perspectives, and postcolonial
approaches have provided important spatial, cross-border, and emancipatory
impulses to Swiss historical research. If, however, we consider the State of research
in the area of migration history, there are still few studies that incorporate migrants
as historical subjects and examine their contributions as social and political actors
in the shaping of society. Thus far historical research into immigration has largely
focused on the Swiss migration regime and on national dynamics of exclusion with
respect to corresponding institutional and administrative practices, legitimating
discourses, and political debates. Surveys of Swiss history, too, reflect the use of
a narrative that primarily considers the interpretations, behaviour and sensitivities
of the host society. Renewed approaches to historical research on migration now
focus more firmly on migrants as empowered actors, on their chosen strategies in
order to meet certain expectations and norms, and on the opportunities for action
that they took advantage of and sought to multiply.”
