Abstract:

In the Swiss region of Vaud (785,000 inhabitants), the number of unaccompanied asylum seeker minors (UASM) increased from an average of 43 in 2014, to 272 in November 2016. UASM comprised 0.8% of 5,337 asylum seekers in 2014, and 4.27% of 6,356 in November 2016. UASM are exposed to many stressors that can cause mental health problems, often expressed by behavioural disorders. By the end of 2016, there had been eight suicidal attempts, 15 cases of self-harm, and a significant number of fights and tantrums in foster homes, increasing pressure on the health system. The Public Health Service has mandated a field analysis to determine the major problems, and lead a working group to find solutions, with representatives of foster homes, primary health care, hospitals and psychiatrists, tutors, schools and child protection services.
