Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bis Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war die Schweiz ein Auswanderungsland. Das Ausmass der Emigration war dabei deutlich h\u00f6her als in anderen europ\u00e4ischen L\u00e4ndern. Zur saisonalen Emigration, die seit dem Mittelalter vor allem f\u00fcr die alpinen und voralpinen Regionen typisch war, kamen im 19. Jahrhundert eigentliche Auswanderungswellen hinzu, die auff\u00e4llig mit schlechten Ernten korrelierten.
Der Grund f\u00fcr dieses Ph\u00e4nomen liegt im \u00abUnverm\u00f6gen,angemessen auf den starken Bev\u00f6lkerungsdruck zu reagieren\u00bb. Was das bedeutet, wird in den folgenden Ausf\u00fchrungen im Sinne einer Mikrostudie konkretisiert und exemplifiziert. Als Beispiel dient die Aargauer Gemeinde Rothrist, die 1855 in einer konzertierten Aktion 12% ihrer Bev\u00f6lkerung nach Nordamerika schickte, nachdem \u00fcber Jahre die Sozialausgaben massiv zugenommen hatten und Dutzende von Familien auf Unterst\u00fctzung angewiesen waren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland, viewed through the prism of emigration. In the 19th century, Switzerland bore witness to a surge in economically motivated emigration. Three emigration peaks can be observed, each of which correlated with crop failures amidst economic uncertainty. The underlying cause of the most significant peak, occurring around 1850, was a supply crisis lasting several years in conjunction with a major shift in the textile industry. Northern Switzerland, whose economic landscape was strongly characterized by the homework industry, thus saw thousands of its small farmers and homeworkers subjected to hardships. The social systems of the communities, tasked with supporting their citizens, were quickly overwhelmed. A radical solution was found in organized emigration overseas. An example of one such wave of mass emigration is that of the Rothrist municipality in Aargau, from which the largest group of Aargau emigrants was dispatched in 1855. In the 20th century, the municipality increasingly devoted its attention to taking stock of this event and was the sole Swiss municipality to erect a monument, in the middle of town, to its fellow townspeople having emigrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
