It focuses on a category that strongly marked the European migratory landscape in the second half of the 20th century: the seasonal worker status as conceived by the Swiss state. This status was the cornerstone of the Swiss migration regime in the decades following WWII. For Swiss authorities concerned with combatting “foreign overpopulation” (“Überfremdung”), this particularly coercive legal construct was functional in that it facilitated the admission and exploitation of foreigners whose integration into Swiss society was nevertheless hampered. The seasonal status made their migration precarious, profitable and reversible. While this migration category exerted strong disciplinary control over the categorized, the article examines the expressions of contestation. Drawing on the preliminary results of research grounded in oral history, the article delves behind the scenes of seasonal workers’ migration, revealing how resistance to their status took primarily an “infrapolitical” form in the sense understood by James Scott. The article shows how seasonal workers and their families managed to open up spaces of underground dissent where the two foundations of the status—seasonality of stay and absence of family—were effectively undermined. The study of these invisible resistances to the migration order reveals (another) political history of contemporary Switzerland, in which seasonal workers are central actors.

Keywords:

migration,

seasonality,

family reunification,

resistance,

infrapolitics

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[35
854,7,21,147,52,87,175,36,140,220,349,183
post-38762","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-history","tag-854","tag-article","tag-family","tag-family-reunification","tag-french-language","tag-history","tag-italians","tag-migration-policy","tag-portuguese","tag-seasonal-workers","tag-spaniards","tag-yugoslavs
["GET
