As a result, their children are – in principle – considered illegal on Swiss territory: they cannot go to school and risk being expelled if they are caught by the Aliens Police. Yet despite the constraints, the uncertainties and, above all, the fear, many families decide to reunite in Switzerland to avoid separation. Until now, the experiences of these children have remained largely unknown, so long has the silence demanded by their situation persisted. But there are ways of breaking or even questioning this silence. Based on oral history interviews with former ‘forbidden’ children, this thesis retraces the lives of dozens of families of Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and Yugoslav origin between 1948 and 1992. It reconstructs the historical dynamics that forced these migrants to develop increasingly complex strategies to achieve their family plans, sometimes making use of the grey areas of the Swiss system.”

Mots-clés : Histoire des migrations, histoire suisse, « Trente Glorieuses », saisonniers, regroupement familial, enfants migrants, clandestinité, mémoire familiale, histoire orale, silences, Migration history, Swiss history, ‘Trente Glorieuses’, guest workers, family reunification, migrant children, clandestinity, family memory, oral history

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

24
306,407,281,318,151,589,147,28,52,87,271,154,104,356,736,621,402,245,262,158
post-37360","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-society-family-racism","tag-306","tag-access-to-education","tag-belonging","tag-children","tag-cultural-identity","tag-doctoral-thesis","tag-family-reunification","tag-foreigners","tag-french-language","tag-history","tag-human-rights-violations","tag-interviews","tag-living-conditions","tag-migratory-status","tag-narratives","tag-street-level-bureaucracy","tag-temporary-admission","tag-temporary-migration","tag-undocumented-immigrants","tag-working-conditions
["GET
