In a sentence-completion-test, two thirds mention spontaneously to be annoyed at working together with Italians. On the whole, the aversion of the badly qualified labourers is considerably stronger. With regard to the motives, there seems to be evidence that the assiduousness of the Italians — in order to make as much money as possible within the limited time — is one of the crucial aspects of the problem. For it conflicts with the high esteem of work of the Swiss. In such a situation, the Swiss is inclined to utilize as a rationalization of his aversion parts of the stereotypes of the Italian, more or less commonly held in all countries (lazy, dolce far niente, dirty, unreliable).”

Author(s) : H. -J.
