\n\n“In Switzerland, the public display of discrimination on the basis of<\/span> a person\u2019s religious affiliation has <\/span>been prohibited by the Criminal Code since 1994. Yet, three out of ten Muslims report having <\/span>experienced discrimination in the previous year, a proportion close to that of other European <\/span>countries. This gap between a c<\/span>reed of equality and the widespread experience of discrimination on <\/span>the part of a minority group is a challenge for Western Europe, marked as it is by growing religious <\/span>and ethnic diversity. This PhD thesis is a sociological inquiry into the extent and nat<\/span>ure of <\/span>discrimination against Muslims on a national scale, and will answer the following questions: Are <\/span>Muslims disadvantaged on the labour market in Switzerland, and, if so, can this be attributed to ethno<\/span>–<\/span>religious discrimination? To what extent do Musli<\/span>ms perceive discrimination? What kind of<\/span>
discrimination do Muslim women who wear the<\/span> hijab<\/span> face, and why? Finally, once they have perceived <\/span>discrimination, to what extent do Muslims report it compared to another religious minority, and what <\/span>might explain a<\/span>ny possible differences between the two minority groups? Mobilizing different <\/span>theoretical frameworks (mainly the theories of attribution, human capital, intersectionality, and <\/span>choice<\/span>–<\/span>environment), and drawing on various<\/span> datasets (population surveys and cen<\/span>suses, a corpus of<\/span>
qualitative interviews, records of self<\/span>–<\/span>reports, legal records), our study has produced results that may <\/span>be useful both academically and in practical terms. These results not only contribute to the existing <\/span>literature on discrimination,<\/span> but can also inform policies that aim to reduce anti<\/span>–<\/span>Muslim discrimination <\/span>in Switzerland in particular, and to address<\/span> discrimination against ethno<\/span>–<\/span>religious minorities in <\/span>general.<\/span>“<\/p>\n“En Suisse, toute discrimination publique sur la base de l\u2019apparten<\/span>ance religieuse est formellement <\/span>interdite par le code p\u00e9nal depuis 1994. Cette th\u00e8se de doctorat est une enqu<\/span>\u00eate sociologique <\/span>sur l’\u00e9tendue et la nature de la discrimination \u00e0 l’encontre des musulman\u00b7e\u00b7s \u00e0 l’\u00e9chelle nationale, et <\/span>r\u00e9pond aux questions suivantes : Les personnes musulmanes sont<\/span>–<\/span>elles d\u00e9savantag\u00e9es sur le march\u00e9 <\/span>du travail en Suisse et, si tel est le<\/span> cas, ce d\u00e9savantage peut<\/span>–<\/span>il \u00eatre attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 une discrimination ethno<\/span>–<\/span>religieuse ? Dans quelle mesure les musulman\u00b7e\u00b7s per\u00e7oivent<\/span>–<\/span>ils\/elles la discrimination ? Quel type de<\/span>
discrimination les femmes musulmanes qui portent le<\/span> hijab<\/span> subissent<\/span>–<\/span>elles, et pourq<\/span>uoi ? Enfin, <\/span>lorsque la discrimination est per\u00e7ue, dans quelle mesure les personnes musulmanes la signalent<\/span>–<\/span>elles <\/span>par rapport \u00e0 une autre minorit\u00e9 religieuse, et comment expliquer d’\u00e9ventuelles diff\u00e9rences entre les <\/span>deux groupes minoritaires ? Mobilisant d<\/span>iff\u00e9rents cadres th\u00e9oriques (principalement les th\u00e9ories de <\/span>l’attribution, du capital humain, de l’intersectionnalit\u00e9 et du choice<\/span>–<\/span>environment) et s’appuyant sur <\/span>divers jeux de donn\u00e9es (enqu\u00eates et recensements de population, corpus d’entretiens qualitatif<\/span>s, <\/span>recueil de cas auto<\/span>–<\/span>d\u00e9clar\u00e9s, recueil de cas juridiques), nos \u00e9tudes fournissent des r\u00e9sultats qui <\/span>peuvent \u00eatre utiles tant sur le plan acad\u00e9mique que sur le plan pratique.
