“This report examines the evolution in attitudes towards migrants and migration <\/span>in Europe. Concretely,<\/span> the report<\/span> investigate<\/span>s<\/span> and discuss<\/span>es<\/span> the changes in <\/span>the perception of migrants and attitudes towards migration between 2002<\/span>–<\/span>2018 using the European Socia<\/span>l Survey data. Both the evolution of migration<\/span>
perceptions within countries and the cross<\/span>–<\/span>national evolution across Euro<\/span>pean countries<\/span> are<\/span> discussed and illustrated visually<\/span>.<\/span> The a<\/span>nalyses indicate <\/span>that m<\/span>ost Europeans<\/span> are<\/span> either<\/span> ambivalent<\/span> or<\/span> relatively positive<\/span> about migra<\/span>tion<\/span>.<\/span> Further, important between<\/span>–<\/span>country differences are<\/span> present in Europe<\/span>. <\/span>Central and Eastern European countries are especially negative about migra<\/span>tion, and they have also grown more negative in the wake of the 2015<\/span>–<\/span>2016 <\/span>r<\/span>efugee<\/span> crisi<\/span>s.<\/span> Scandinavian and Anglo<\/span>–<\/span>Saxon countries<\/span>, in contrast,<\/span> hold <\/span>more positive views. In fact, in most European countries, citizens have be<\/span>come more supportive of tolerant immigration policies<\/span> over the examined pe<\/span>riod<\/span>, though few are supportive of<\/span> an open border policy. Finally,<\/span> certain<\/span> cat<\/span>egories of citizens in the sample tend to exhibit lower levels of support<\/span> for <\/span>migration<\/span>. Citizens with<\/span> lower levels of income and education, (radical) right<\/span>–<\/span>leaning political attitudes, low levels of trust,<\/span> and<\/span> th<\/span>e elderly<\/span>, are on average <\/span>more negative about migrants and open border policies.<\/span><\/span>”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
