“This study investigates the<\/span> 2014 vote \u2018against mass<\/span> immigration<\/span>\u2019<\/span>(<\/span>Masseneinwanderungs<\/span>–<\/span>
initiative<\/span>)<\/span> in Switzerland<\/span> by<\/span> employing a discourse<\/span>–<\/span>historical approach to critical discourse<\/span>
analysis<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he Foucauldian<\/span> theoretical framework of governmentality<\/span> is used to<\/span> reveal<\/span> how power<\/span>
and knowledge production on immigration in<\/span> Switzerland<\/span> has been dominated<\/span> by elite actors in<\/span>
politics and the media.<\/span> In the context of direct democracy and immigration governmentality in<\/span>
Switzerland,<\/span> it highlights how the national<\/span>–<\/span>conservative Swiss People\u2019s Party<\/span> (<\/span>SVP<\/span>)<\/span> has used the<\/span>
popular initiative as an instrument to exert their power, and push forward their anti<\/span>–<\/span>
Europeanization and anti<\/span>–<\/span>immigration agenda<\/span>.<\/span> D<\/span>ata<\/span> is drawn<\/span> from the SVP campaign<\/span> and<\/span>
fourteen<\/span> articles from four major Swiss newspapers<\/span><\/span>. By identifying the<\/span> discursive strategies and<\/span>
arguments of legitimation<\/span> surrounding the vote, the analysis<\/span> reveal<\/span>s<\/span> how<\/span> the<\/span> existent fears of<\/span>
\u2018over<\/span>–<\/span>foreignization\u2019 are (re)produce<\/span>d in the<\/span> polarizing<\/span> discourses of the SVP and popular<\/span>
