This thesis focuses on inequalities in educational pathways according to migration origin in Switzerland and their progressive construction over time. It answers two main questions: 1) what is the extent of inequalities in post-compulsory educational pathways according to migration origin, and 2) how educational pathways are constructed over time and at different moments of transition? We focus on the roles played by the young person himself, by the family and by the organisation of the educational system and the practices of their agents. We adopt a mixed method design, which combines longitudinal quantitative analyses of the types of educational pathways in Switzerland and in-depth analyses of biographical interviews with descendants of Albanian-speaking immigrants from the proceeding countries of Yugoslavia (mainly of Kosovar origin) in the cantons of Geneva and Vaud.

The results reveal a polarization of educational pathways between and within the categories of analyses and call for a greater understanding of the mechanisms that create inequalities over time. Differences in young people’s school competences, social origin and orientation within lower secondary education tracks explain unequal access to higher education. However, there is still an over-representation in discontinuous and problematic vocational education and training pathways of the descendants of immigrants from the former Yugoslavia, Turkey and Portugal compared to the native population. Second, this thesis highlights the different mechanisms and configurations of the individual, family and institutional dimensions that influence educational choices. The results advocate for considering the complex situations of interactions and interdependencies between the different dimensions in the study of educational pathways inequalities.

Author(s) : Andrés Gomensoro Source : https://serval.unil.ch/notice/serval:BIB_F6421CD208DD Abstract:

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

61
582,336,318,589,229,274,21,52,341,298,230,363,145,370,118
post-3459","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-education","tag-582","tag-albanians","tag-children","tag-doctoral-thesis","tag-educational-attainment","tag-educational-inequality","tag-family","tag-french-language","tag-geneva","tag-kosovars","tag-pathways","tag-school","tag-second-generation","tag-vaud","tag-youth
["GET
