“Several academic fields study how immigrants choose their place of residence <\/span>when moving to, or within destination countries. Existing studies, however, focus <\/span>on isolated factors, and we do not know whether political factors matter once we <\/span>have accounted for well established determinants. This paper examines the <\/span>extent<\/span> to<\/span> which<\/span> political factors, such as voting rights for foreign<\/span> citizens, <\/span>citizenship<\/span> policies<\/span> and<\/span> popular<\/span> support<\/span> for<\/span> right-populist<\/span> parties,<\/span> influence <\/span>internal mobility decisions of immigrants, relative to other variables. We draw on <\/span>a 2020 conjoint experiment in Switzerland (N=1,596) in the context of a larger <\/span>survey of foreign citizens who arrived in Switzerland in the preceding 15 years. <\/span>The conjoint experiment provides data on the causal effects of contextual factors<\/span>
on mobility decisions, allowing us to assess their relative importance. We show <\/span>that inclusive political reception contexts constitute a pull factor for immigrants. <\/span>Exploratory analysis indicates that the size of the effect of the political reception <\/span>context on residential location choice depends on educational achievement, <\/span>income, legal status, a feeling of belonging to Switzerland and social networks. <\/span>We conclude that studies of immigrant location choice should routinely consider <\/span>political factors.<\/span><\/span>“<\/p>\n
