The assumption has been that Switzerland was not directly involved in the war because of its status as a neutral country that was spared the war. This is partly (and understandably) seen in much of the historiography that has since emerged. It was with even greater conviction that Switzerland itself saw things this way toward the end of the Second World War. While Swiss neutrality was based on two elements \u2013 the interests of the great powers and internal cohesion \u2013 during the Second World War, the country\u2019s neutrality policies were multifaceted.
