Subsequent sections discuss the change in migration patterns; how political emigrants and refugees were dealt with; the role of exile communities; the establishment of new border controls and a Federal Immigration Authority; and eventually the discourse on “Überfremdung“. This article argues that the war gave rise to new migratory patterns and a defensive outlook against foreigners in Switzerland. Furthermore, the state of war enabled the Swiss government to centralise migration control at the federal level.”

Keywords: Switzerland; Migration; Exile; Foreigners; Immigration Authority

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

35
285,49,37,585,586,40,563,98,330,90,103
post-3255","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-history","tag-285","tag-asylum-policy","tag-attitudes-towards-migrants","tag-encyclopedia-article","tag-first-world-war","tag-immigration-control","tag-immigration-law","tag-immigration-policy","tag-politics","tag-reception-policy","tag-refugees
["GET
